Bordeaux Total René Gabriel:

51 % Merlot, 41 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 8 % Petit Verdot. 30 hl./ha. Sehr dunkles Purpur mit lila und auch violetten Reflexen. Kühles, florales Bouquet, Havannatouch, Holundernoten, nobel, zeigt eine schöne Tiefe. Sehr langer, fein gewobener Gaumen, tolle Balance, erinnert deutlich an die damalige Fassprobe vom Jahrgang 1985, weist Rückhalt und gute Reserven auf und die Adstringenz vereilt sich gleichmässig über den ganzen Gaumenrand. Dieser grossartige Palmer ist kein Spektakel sondern das Resultat, aus einem schwierigen, späten Jahrgang auf faire Weise das Beste heraus zu holen. Direktor Thomas Duroux: «Für mich ein sehr raffinierter, finessenreicher Palmer!» Im Mai 2010 wieder verkostet. Wunderschön würzig mit floraler Frische. Das wier schon bald einmal ein sehr eleganter Klassiker. Also kann man ihn vielleicht etwas früher angehen als ich beim Primeur vermutete. Bewertung 18/20. -2030. -René Gabriel-

Tasted ex-chateau and single blind in Southwold. Two bottles of Chateau Palmer were opened. It has a very sophisticated, but slightly broody bouquet with blackberry cassis, graphite and a little more earthiness than I recall. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine delineation, tightly knit with superb focus and sense of harmony. Crisp, sinewy and multi-faceted, this is a great Palmer for the vintage and a serious contender for the best wine of the appellation. Bravo. Tasted January 2012. Rating 95/100. -Neal Martin-

Vinous:

The 2008 Palmer has a very intense bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, crushed violet and iris scents, blossoming in the glass whilst retaining superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but quite rounded tannin that frame the pure blackberry and raspberry fruit. There are touches of white pepper and clove towards the finish, completing quite a superb Margaux from Thomas Duroux. Equal with Château Margaux? It might even be better... Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, dezente Randaufhellung, zart floral unterlegte Kirschfrucht, dezente Edelholzwürze, ein Hauch von Nougat, Kräutertouch, feines, typisches Bukett. Mittlere Komplexität, feine rotbeerige Nuancen, dezente Tannine, die gut eingebunden sind, bereits gut antrinkbar, wirkt etwas altmodisch, ein eleganter Speisenbegleiter. Jancis Robinson:

There's a really delicious green streak to the nose here – perhaps it's a touch of underripeness, perhaps Cabernet Franc, but it works so nicely. Certainly it's preferable to the 2009, to my mind at least. Crunchy black fruit, firm but smooth tannins. Perfectly ripe but with the edge of herby flavour adding complexity. A great example.
