Robert Parker Wine Advocate:
A slightly higher production of 775 cases was made with the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a prodigious Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, with notes of creosote, camphor and burning embers, which give it an almost Graves-like character, but then the rich, creamy, pure blackberry and cassis fruit kick in. The wine has fabulous intensity, a multi-layered, dense, full-bodied texture and terrific finish. The tannins are slightly more dominant than in the 2012, but they offer sweetness and creaminess as opposed to any astringency or harshness, This is a modern-day classic from Vine Hill Ranch and probably the finest wine they have ever made. Drink it over the next 30+ years. Drink Date 2015-2045. Rating 96+/100. -Robert M. Parker, Jr.-
Vinous:
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is a potent, brooding wine. Still quite tannic, the 2013 possesses tremendous depth married to vibrancy, all in a virile style that is going to require patience. Gravel, scorched earth, cloves, menthol and dried herbs are all kicked up in this potent, structured Cabernet. Graphite, sage, tobacco, menthol and licorice lead into the savory, mineral finish. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. The 2013 captures the purest essence of Vine Hill Ranch. Drink Date 2025-2038. Rating 99/100. -Antonio Galloni-
Vine Hill Ranch:
2013 It is rare that two consecutive growing seasons of such impeccable quality materialize. On the heels of the prior year’s idyllic harvest, 2013 presented superior growing conditions that resulted in a winegrape crop of exceptional quality—a perfect season.
Following relatively light rainfall, the growing season presented consistently warm and temperate conditions, allowing our vine canopies to fall perfectly into balance. Without significant interruptions from rainfall or extreme temperature changes, the VHR fruit attained desired maturity. During the spring and summer months, we installed the vineyard framework and planted selected rootstocks in our historic, 11-acre hillside Block 1. We also began redevelopment of our benchland Block 3D, removing the Petit Verdot in favor of the more appropriately sited Cabernet Sauvignon.
Lastly, we focused significant attention to ensure the long-term sustainability of the ancient oak woodlands on our property, some of which date back more than 300 years. We amended soils and performed much-needed canopy work to ensure that the trees thrive for future generations to enjoy at Vine Hill Ranch.
