Mastering Rioja since 1989

Founded in 1989 and located in the centre of Samaniego, Álava, at Remírez de Ganuza we make contemporary Rioja wines, from 80 hectares of our own estate owned vineyards. There are 70 individual vineyards made up of more than 200 plots across 9 municipalities in the foothills of Sierra Cantabria: Labastida, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Ábalos, Samaniego, Leza, Elciego, Navaridas, Laguardia and Elvillar.

Since our beginnings we have been characterized by revolutionizing some of the traditional methods in the area, introducing improvements both in the vineyard and in winemaking. One of the most notable systems is to separate the Tempranillo bunches into two parts.

The shoulders, with perfect phenolic ripeness, are used for the wines with more aging potential, such as the Remírez de Ganuza Reserva, while the tips are used for the young carbonic maceration wine, like Erre Punto.

Everything is important at Remírez de Ganuza and attention to detail is key. From the harvest, which is done manually in 12-kilo boxes; the meticulous selection of grapes; the respect for the grapes in the production processes; hygiene measures that border on obsession and long ageing in new, mostly French oak barrels. No bottle of Remírez de Ganuza goes on the market without having been left to rest for a long time in the winery. We believe that only time allows the wine to develop the characteristics and style that we seek as winemakers.
