The Marengo family has pulled away from the pack, thanks to the exceptional 2013 Barolo Brunate. This is a seriously stunning wine, and I highly recommend it to those who are looking to expand their Barolo horizons. Grapes are harvested from the La Morra portion of the Brunate cru, and this estate owns just one of the 25 hectares that make up the entire vineyard designate. Wines from Brunate are always more austere and complex, and they show a unique sense of grounded tannic firmness that is also slightly sweet and yielding at the same time. This wine builds power as it sits in the glass. It will look forward to a long aging future ahead. Drink Date 2018-2035. Rating 96/100. - Monica Larner -

Vinous:

Marengo 2013 Barolo Riserva Brunate is a potent wine. There is plenty of brightness and energy, but whether or not the 2013 ever grows into a truly complete wine is an open question. As is often the case, the Riserva is decidedly pushed in style, which I am not sure the wine really needs or benefits from. Bright red cherry, plum, blood orange, chalk, spice and floral notes add striking nuance. Today, the Riserva is decidedly austere. Rating 93/100. - Antonio Galloni -

A lithe, fluid version, this exhibits rose, strawberry and cherry flavors, with a hint of licorice. Very delicate for a Barolo, reflecting both the region and the vintage. Delivers a long finish and refined tannins. Best from 2022 through 2036. 500 cases made. Rating 94/100. - Bruce Sanderson -
